Session #2 - Absolute Ethanol Embolization Treatment for Vascular (Venous) Malformation
There is not a lot to describe here that is fundamentally different from session #1, but there were some changes, mostly positive ones:-
- Because this was our second time visiting Ahmedabad from Chennai, we had planned better and it was mostly rewarding. We also stayed in the same room as last time in the hospital. Everything was great overall.
- The biggest change was that this time, I landed in Ahmedabad at 6am and then went to the hospital by 7:30am and as soon as we got to the room, we were immediately rushed to the Cath Lab for the procedure. Last time it happened at about 1pm.
- The next biggest change was that the anesthesia procedure was much more minimal. Last time I had to be sedated after my nerve block to the arm because I was still having sensations in my arm after the block. This time I could be awake and I was able to see some of what was going on.
- The dosage of ethanol was 16ml last time but this time it was 32ml. The actual target was 40ml. After they had injected the dye into the nidus they couldn't find a landing zone for the actual application of alcohol. So they had to abandon that 8ml zone. This is what they told me, I'm not a 100% sure what it all means. I'll have to do some external research on how this procedure is done at a technical level.
- Dr. Banker has always repeatedly warned that there will be swelling and pain, both before and after both these sessions. But so far I'm disappointed that I haven't experienced a whole lot of pain. This time the swelling is much more than last time but the pain is fairly moderate and I can even do all the regular things as long as it doesn't involve lifting heavy weights with my left hand.

Note - I couldn't embed this video because YouTube decided to treat this as a short because of the vertical orientation of the footage. And shorts videos aren't allowed to be embedded onto Blogger posts apparently.
I am from Bangalore. My daughter age 8 has extensive venous malformation in her right leg. I am also exploring about absolute ethanol procedure, but it seems rarely any doctor does it here.
ReplyDeleteI have seen Dr Banker videos.
